Create a Memorial Tablet: A Helpful Guide and Timeline

Creating a memorial tablet is one of the most meaningful ways to honor your loved one’s memory and ensure their legacy endures for generations to come. At Mount Sinai Memorial Parks, we understand that this process can feel overwhelming during a time of grief, which is why we’ve created this comprehensive guide to help you navigate each step with confidence and peace of mind.

Whether you’re planning for an unveiling ceremony or simply want to create a lasting tribute, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about memorial tablet creation, from initial design concepts to final placement.

Timeline Example: Planning for a One-Year Anniversary Unveiling

We understand that during the first 30 days after a loss, families are focused on mourning and healing. This timeline reflects the realistic journey most families experience, beginning after the shloshim.

2-3 Months After Passing

Anticipate a Gentle Email or Phone Call: Your Advisor will reach out around this time, but there’s no pressure to begin tablet planning or designing anything. Some families start the process now, while others wait until they feel more emotionally prepared.

First step: Initial conversation about tablet options – no commitments needed yet.

4-6 Months After Passing

Begin tablet design: Most families find this a good time to start the tablet creation process. Connect with your Advisor to discuss tablet options, materials, and begin design concepts.

Goal: Start this phase if you’re planning a one-year anniversary unveiling ceremony.

5-7 Months After Passing

Design and approval: Review design proofs with family members. Take the time you need – this is an important decision that will honor your loved one for generations.

Family involvement: Many families appreciate having input from siblings, children, or other close relatives during this phase.

6-10 Months After Passing

Production phase: Your approved tablet enters our up to 3-month production process. Skilled craftsmen carefully create your memorial tablet using premium materials.

During this time: You can begin thinking about your unveiling ceremony details and guest list.

10-11 Months After Passing

Completion and placement: Your tablet is completed, inspected for quality, and carefully placed. Once installed, you can schedule your unveiling ceremony.

Ready for unveiling: Contact our Unveiling Department to schedule your ceremony for the anniversary date.

Remember: Every family’s journey is different. Some may want to start earlier, others may need more time. There’s no “right” timeline – only what feels right for your family.

Planning Your Unveiling Ceremony

Many families choose to dedicate their memorial tablet during an unveiling ceremony, typically held around the first anniversary of their loved one’s passing. This meaningful tradition brings family and friends together for reflection, prayer, and remembrance.

Timing Your Tablet and Unveiling

To ensure your unveiling ceremony can take place on your preferred date, your memorial tablet must be completed and placed before scheduling. This is why we recommend beginning the tablet design process 4-6 months before your planned ceremony date.

  • Best Practice: Start tablet design 4-6 months before desired unveiling date
  • Completion Goal: Have tablet finished 4-6 weeks before ceremony
  • Scheduling: Contact our Unveiling Department once tablet is placed
  • Ceremony Times: Available every half hour from 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM
