Mel was a beacon of light for seniors in our community. He was passionate, articulate, and ever giving of his time and energy, Mel wanted to make a difference, and he did! It was an honor to learn from and work with Mel. He will truly be missed. Mel's image is featured on the Ventura County Area on Agency van so we will still "see" him as good work is done around the county by that group he was so proud to be a part of. Thank you for making a difference Mel. "It's not what we have in our life, but who we have in our life that counts."

As a professional providing services to the Silberbergs, I can honestly say I enjoyed every interaction I had with Mel. I'm sorry I wasn't in town and was unable to pay my respects in person. -Kris

I got to know Mel through B'nai B'rith. I admired Mel's commitment of community service and consider him a role model in how an individual can make a difference in the lives of others. Everytime I would see Mel at a B'nai B'rith meeting, whether it was located in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or Washington, DC, he always greeting me with a warm, gentle smile. May his memory be for a blessing. Aaron Rose Seattle, Wash.

We are all so sad to hear of our Uncle Mel’s passing. Carol and I are glad we got to see him (and Norma and all my cousins) at Justin and Nina’s wedding. I got to talk with Mel about growing up in the Bronx, about his brothers (my Dad), sports and politics (...and we agreed to disagree!). We always admired Mel for his intellect and passion for many things (like politics). We used to proudly tell our friends that we had an uncle who was really a rocket scientist! He was my Dad’s kid brother and, even though my Dad has been long gone, Mel always seemed to be the “little brother”, always young at heart. To my Aunt Norma, my cousins Sheryl and Steve and Robin and Dean, and Mel’s grandkids, Melissa, Justin and Kara, it’s a really sad time. But you all were so fortunate to have Mel in your lives for so long. He lived a long happy life and all of you made him proud and happy. There’s a saying attributed to Dr. Seuss (of all people): “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened”. We can’t help but smile when we think of Uncle Mel. He just had that way about him.

Thank you for sharing Mel with all the residents of Thousand Oaks. While I did not know him well what I did know of him was that he was committed to making the world a better place for all of us. His work on senior issues in Thousand Oaks will be remembered far into the future. God bless you and your family during these trying times.

Norman and family: We were blessed to have known Mel. He was a super Branch Chief at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and better yet a fine human being. He was a model for us with his ethical behavior and great enthusiasm for all that he undertook. We were flattered that he stayed in touch with us and would get together with us in Rockville when he would come east in the spring time. We are sorry for the family's great loss. Regards, Ed O'Donnell

Norma and kids: We were so sorry to hear about Mel's passing; we thank Robin for letting us know. We had many good evenings in Washington and Las Vegas over the years and were always pleased that you gave us a heads up when you were coming to Vegas so that we could get together. A life, in Judaism, is considered a blessing when one gives to the world a little more than one takes from it over a lifetime. By that standard, Mel's life was a blessing. --Sharna and Stew

It has been an honor to work side by side with Mel on Senior program development. He taught me to never give up, encouraged me to always believe in myself, and to always take care of our community. I am a better person because of Mel and I can't thank you enough for letting him to be part of our lives. My condolences to you and your family. I am right here if you need anything.

Dear Norma and the rest of the Silberberg family, please accept my condolences over Mel's passing. Mel was my boss at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission from 1988 until his retirement in 1994. His rock-solid integrity, impeccable honesty, and political courage were exemplary and inspirational. He had many friends at the NRC who kept in touch with him after he retired to California and delighted in meeting him for lunch when came back east to visit relatives in Maryland. He always had the same enthusiasm and energy for life that we all remembered when he was at the NRC.

Uncle Mel,..So loved, So cherished. So appreciated! I will NEVER forget what a WONDERFUL brother you were to my dad. What a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend you were to us all! Your spirit will live on within us all. We will cling to the memories! The memories of math problems being tossed out to my children verbally across many dinner tables. Your "love" of our Chanukah parties that went on and on and on all night! Your wit, your brains, your fight for justice, your fight to do what needed to be done. Your passion, your mission. You have left a piece of it within everyone who loved you! We will miss you so much!
