Zegmund Oscar Bleviss
August 19, 1922-September 27, 2016

Zegmund “Zig” Bleviss, 94, passed away peacefully at home in Los Angeles. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Lea; daughters, Deborah Bleviss (Bill Lienesch), Ilana Massi (Bob Massi), Sharon Bleviss (Kirk Whitlatch), and Mara Bleviss (Michael Edwards); grandchildren Rob, Eric (Michelle), Nick, Josh (Andie) and Evan (Kate) Massi; Bryan and Rachel Lienesch; Anna, Adam, Aaron, Andrew and Alex Whitlatch; Nathan, Hannah and Jacob Edwards; great-grandson Jameson Massi; sister Lillian Katzen; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Anna Bleviss, and brother David Bleviss. Zig was born in Calgary, Canada. He grew up in Boyle Heights and was active in Habonim. Zig attended UCLA and UC Berkeley, and ultimately earned a PhD in Aeronautics and Mathematics from Cal Tech. He served in the Navy at Moffett Field at NACA (forerunner to NASA). Zig married Lea in Sao Paulo, Brazil, sharing the same home for 64 years, and traveling the world together. Zig had a long career in aeronautical engineering, including over 20 years at Hughes Aircraft, where he was Sr. Scientist for Surveyor, the first unmanned craft to land on the moon. Zig loved educating, and taught courses at USC, UCLA, and Cal Tech. He was a docent at Museum of Science & Industry for many years after retiring. Zig enjoyed tinkering in his garage, traveling with family, photography, surfing the web, and telling the perfect joke. Many of his friends and relatives were treated to his poetry, full of puns, and endless emails. Most of all, Zig cherished his family and life-long friends. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, October 2, 2016, 9 a.m. at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Jewish Federation of Greater LA (https://secure.jewishla.org/page/contribute/general-tribute-2016).
