Stephen S. Wies (1936-2021)
It is with profound sadness that the Wies family announces the passing of their patriarch Stephen S. Wies on Monday, January 25th, 2021 in Simi Valley, CA at the age of 84.
Born in Los Angeles, CA, Steve grew up with strong moral and family values, making close friends that he kept for many decades. After graduating from the University of Southern California in 1958 with a degree in Business Management, he turned his keen eye for quality and detail towards the garment industry and thus creating “Stephen Meadows” in 1962 as the premiere designer of women’s coordinated sportswear. Not long afterwards he married the love of his life Judith Slagle in 1965 and became father to two sons Evan and Darren. Steve’s innovative spirit continued to bloom and, with the aid of his wife and then partner, he created “Max Studio” in 1979 where he stood at the helm traveling the world to source the finest materials. In 1996 he departed from “Max Studio” to create a chic, American manufactured line of women’s clothing called “Devan”, for which he was extremely proud to collaborate with his youngest son, Darren until 2004. With his dynamic and personable style, Steve became mentor to countless young and aspiring entrepreneurs in the fashion industry. He freely lent his skilled hands and broad knowledge along with his unabashedly raw opinions as he pushed others to seek their best. He could growl on occasion, but anyone who truly knew him rested easy knowing the power of his genuine love that he so generously bestowed on his friends, colleagues, and family. His booming baritone laughs, and unparalleled bear hugs quickly washed away any remnants of a dispute. He called himself a ‘work in progress’ and lived by the mantra that every day was another chance to improve oneself. Retiring in Simi Valley, CA in 2008, Steve turned his attention to his grandchildren as well as his hobbies of cruising, remodeling homes, playing bridge with dear friends, and grilling the perfect steak. He was a beautiful soul who enjoyed life to the fullest.
Steve is predeceased by his parents Eva Fuhrman and Alec Wies, and his sister Sylvia Wies Augustine. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years Judi Wies; two sons Evan Wies of Old Greenwich, CT, and Darren Wies of Simi Valley, CA; and his seven grandchildren Marley, Jasper, Connor, Meadow, Willow, Ethan, and Dylan.
As the current circumstances do not allow us all to get together, a memorial gathering to honor his life will be held at a later date. We ask that those who loved him celebrate his life with joy and enthusiasm as he would have wanted. Raise your glass in a moment of silence and you will still hear his laugh. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles at https://www.jbbbsla.org.
