Fifty Five years ago, we moved to 1127 East 56th Street in Brooklyn, New York. At approximately the same time, Shirley and her family became our neighbors, moving next door to us. From then on, not only were we neighbors but we became dear friends, close to being family. We shared lifes experiences, raising children, enjoying good times and hurting with few difficulties. Shirley was there for us as needed as we were for her. Whether it was sickness with our children, baby sitting or other situations that required each other, Shirley did whatever she could.. Her smarts, no matter the situation, always prevailed. But one thing was for sure, family came first, always. Many stories could be told about our very close relationship, each story ending with either smiles or tears. That is what friends are for, being there for each other during good and bad times. Of course when Shirley and family (other than Jon) moved to California, it ended our being neighbors but our friendship remained intact even though we did not see each other or talk frequently which, looking back, is sad. This wonderful woman, "Big Red", was a joy, extremely intelligent, great sense of humor, loving, caring and a mother with a capital M, anything for the children. The end of lifes story with Shirl has come to an end. However, she will never be forgotten and will live in our hearts forever. May each of you, her children, her grand-children, remember her in your own way with only wonderful memories to cherish. With love always, Roz amp; Jerry

We are very sorry to hear that Shirley passed away! We will remember her fondly for her colorful stories, sharp wit, and New York street smarts. She told us many stories which revealed her deep commitment to her children. She was fortunate to have your own commitment, especially since falling ill in April. Please share our sympathy with your family at her funeral today. Very Sincerely, Dr. Roesler, Silvia, Maggie, Belgica, and Jennifer

Hi cousins, Thinking of you as you gather to say good bye to your dear mama. I think of Shirley as the hearty and lusty finagler of our youth. She really did milk life for all it was worth. It was a good run. Blessings on you all, and lots of love.

Dearest Cookie, I did not have the pleasure of meeting Shirley. I do remember her in your conversations and felt like I knew Shirley, you always were there for your Mother and family. I send warm embracing thoughts and say a prayer for her journey home.

Mom, Your bravery, tenacity and true will to survive has been an inspiration to me. You were and continue to be, in my heart.. you are so spirited, strong and funny.. you are a true character, larger than life and certainly colorful in every way. You also made the best chicken soup from Brooklyn to Los Angeles! I love you forever.
