Raymond Thomas Cayse, ninety-three, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2022 in Tarzana, California, with his wife, Doris Jean (Dojie), by his side. Ray’s kind and gentle spirit, unending creativity, and legacy of unconditional love will long be remembered.
Ray was born in St. Louis to Linden and Ethel Cayse on September 13, 1929. He attended William Beaumont High School, graduating in 1947. After receiving a degree in architecture from Washington University, he served in the U.S. Army as a construction surveyor followed by the Army Reserves for a total of eight years. He spent his early years as an architect in the St. Louis area, while also pursuing his life-long golf passion. Ray was a talented golfer and so intrigued with the game that he even took a year off of his career to pursue a professional golf career. He ultimately chose architecture but continued playing golf and intensely studying the mechanics of the golf swing for the rest of his life. He never missed an opportunity to share his latest ideas or device to illustrate his dual swing concept, earning him the title of “Golf Swing Theorist” with family and friends alike.
Ray married Mary Louise Hemmer in 1962 and had two children: Julie and Russell. Years after they divorced, Ray married Phyllis Schectman in 1976, and the two moved to Los Angeles. He spent the remainder of his fifty year architectural career in the Los Angeles area. As an architect for California State University, Northridge he worked on many projects over the years, including serving as Project Manager for a $12 million complex Student Union Expansion project and an equally large physical education addition project. He retired from California State Polytechnic University in 2004.
During his thirty year marriage to Phyllis, they were active members of Valley Outreach Synagogue, where Ray made the decision to convert to Judaism. After Phyllis’s death, he married Doris Jean (Dojie) Reisman, who was by his side for fifteen years.
Ray is survived by his wife, Dojie; two children, four stepsons, and their spouses: Julie Kirkpatrick (Brent), Russ Cayse (Lisa), David Schectman, David Reisman, and Michael Reisman (Maryrose); grandchildren: Louis, Jenna, Hayden, Parker, Kali, and Olive; and great-grandson, Magnus. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister, Robert (Bob) and Dorothy Vreeland; and his second wife, Phyllis.
A funeral service will be held at the Mount Sinai Chapel in Simi Valley on January 22, 2023, at 10:00 AM with Rabbi Ron Li-Paz. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Valley Outreach Synagogue & Center for Jewish Life, 26668 Agora Road, Calabasas, CA 91302; www.vosla.org
