Michael Alan Orlikoff

Michael Alan Orlikoff slipped away peacefully on January 25, 2019, at Providence Tarzana Hospital, due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Michael was 79.

Michael was an only child, born in Chicago, Illinois to his late parents, Jack and Esther Orlikoff. Michael and his family relocated to the Los Angeles area at the age of two and was a life-long resident. Michael graduated from Hamilton High School in 1957 and maintained friendships with his classmates for over 60 years. He enlisted in the California Army National Guard in 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1963.

Michael was the ultimate salesman and learned his trade from his father and best friend, Jack Orlikoff, the founder of Pacific Coast Shoe Company. Michael was only 15 when he started selling shoes in the wholesale “jobber” shoe business. Eventually, he founded Michael’s Shoes for Men, and quickly earned the reputation for a wide selection of quality fashion men’s shoes at a great price. His business expanded to include a chain of 15 name-brand men’s fashion retail stores, as well as, a wholesale and discount shoe operation in Los Angeles, and Orange and Ventura Counties. After working his business for over 50 years, he retired in 2006.

Michael had a larger-than-life personality and never met a stranger. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed boating, cooking, traveling, and spending time with family. He was the ultimate host and loved entertaining. His friend will remember his great sense of humor, his storytelling and his time to kibitz.

Michael lit up the room when he spoke about his family, and leaves behind his beautiful daughters, Dana (Nelson) McCormick and Kimberly Slevin, and five grandchildren, Danny, Tyler, Emily, Kylie, and Katie. Michael is survived by the love of his life, Mary Kersting, his partner and best friend for 45 years.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 11:30 am at Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries, 5950 Forest Lawn Dr, Los Angeles, California 90068.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael’s memory to the Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles:
