Affectionately known as “Herbie,” Herbert Gassman was born on March 24, 1918, in Breslau, Germany to Selma and Albert Gassman. Urged by his parents and sponsored by his older brother Karl, Herbie fled Nazi Germany in 1937 to California, initially settling in San Francisco and later making Los Angeles his permanent home. Shortly after relocating to LA, he began his long-term professional career at Harris & Frank Clothiers downtown. After retiring, he found joy and purpose as a volunteer in the Finance Department of The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles – a role that would span the next 35 years. He became a cherished member of the organization – everyone treasured his warmth, kindness, sense of humor, and devotion to the Federation — and to them. He was a beloved patron and friend of many establishments in his neighborhood, and his sweet presence will be missed by all.
Herbie passed away on December 8th at the age of 98. He is survived by his nephew Steve (Myra) Gassman of Charlotte, North Carolina, great-nephew Grant Gassman of Denver, Colorado, and great-niece Royce Gassman also of Charlotte, North Carolina.
