ELLISON-Robert Samuel Ellison died on August 2, 2016. Robert Ellison
was born on July 28, 1921, in Marion, Ohio. A graduate of Mansfield Senior
High School in Mansfield, Ohio, he attended Hiram College on a tennis
scholarship. He earned a baccalaureate and masters degree from The
Ohio State University and received his medical degree from Wayne State
University School of Medicine in 1945. Dr. Ellison was a board certified
obstetrician-gynecologist who practiced medicine for more than seven
decades. He served two tours as a U.S. Army medical officer in Panama
and in Battle Creek, Michigan. As a physician, he was decades ahead of
his time in understanding that health care is a basic human right. Dr. Ellison
was a founder of a multi-specialty group practice in Mansfield and joined
OB-GYN Medical Group in Arcadia in the early 1970s. Upon retiring from
the Arcadia practice, he provided medical services at the East Valley
Community Health Center for over twenty years. Robert Ellison married
Barbara Menkes in 1942, and they reveled in their marriage for 64 years.
Bob and Barbara traveled the world together and enjoyed time with friends
and family. They were active members of Temple Beth David. Robert
Ellison is survived by his two sons and their wives, Charles and Hilary and
Richard and Paula; seven grandchildren, Anne Marie, Aaron, Samuel, Joel,
Rachel, Marisa, and Karl; and three great granddaughters. To his sons, he
and Barbara passed down an unwavering commitment to social justice and
a deep love of baseball. Robert Ellison was an avid bridge player and
achieved the rank of grand master. For the last seven years Jeanne
Gerson has been his loving and regular companion. Together they enjoyed
dining out, travel and cruises, and many cultural and family events. There
will be a memorial service at Temple Beth David, 9677 East Longden
Avenue, Temple City, at 10:30 AM on Sunday, August 14, 2016. In lieu of
flowers, tributes may be sent to Temple Beth David. Contributions may be
