Beverly (Sudman) Adler October 11, 1937 – September 18, 2021
Beverly passed away peacefully at home with family members and her loving caretaker by her side from a long battle with chronic lung issues. She was just shy of her 84th birthday.
Born to Joseph and Helene Sudman, Beverly moved as a youngster to Westchester, California from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, along with her brother Leonardo and sister Shirley. Beverly graduated from Westchester High School in 1954 and continued at community college for a year while working in downtown Los Angeles at a bank.
Bev was an avid tap and jazz dancer who frequently danced on television variety shows with her partner Gail. Her love and skill for dance was often enjoyed at weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs where she frequented the dance floor with her Uncle Robert Gabriel. The woman knew how to swing-dance!
Beverly married in 1955, moved from Los Angeles, California to Torrance, California and then to Rancho Palos Verdes, California. During those 39 years of marriage, she had 3 children (Mark, Lori, and Eric) who were all raised there and where she devoted her life to being an amazing and loving mother. She was a Girl Scout leader, a baseball team-mother, and an elementary school room-mother. Anything that allowed her to be around her kids made her happy. The family took many vacations together which included “glamping” at Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Death Valley National Parks, a long road trip to see her brother Leonardo and parents in Oregon, and many other family trips including Hawaii and Europe. Bev’s love for travel took her to various countries such as Africa, China, Europe, Indonesia, Asia, Caribbean Islands, and cruising through the Panama Canal and Alaska. She also took mother-daughter trips to various spas, and other trips including Mexico, and New York City.
Beverly held other jobs as well. Her children loved that she worked at Mattel, Inc., where they could test toys that hadn’t hit the market yet. What fun for them! She also worked for Temple Ner Tamid for 38 years as a Secretary to Rabbis Mervin Tomsky and Ronald Schulman. She was involved with the sisterhood there as well. One of her proudest moments was becoming a B’Nai Mitzvah as an adult. Beverly was loved by all, including congregants and their children who would deliberately visit Bev at the temple’s office to see her darling Shih-Tzu named MuShu. The kids loved that dog!
In Beverly’s younger years she was an avid bowler, enjoyed swimming and exercising at Jack LaLanne’s gym as well as playing golf in Palm Desert where she had a home. She also loved knitting, crocheting, needlepoint and painting. Every Wednesday was her “girls-night-out” where the same group of women met up at each other’s homes for an evening of Pan. They played together for over 30 years. In later years Bev enjoyed playing Mahjong with another group of ladies.
Bev moved from the South Bay in 2019 to Van Nuys, California to live with her son Eric, wife Marilyn, grandson Zachary and their two dogs. She loved to be where there was a lot of activity and the home provided plenty of that.
Beverly is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Shirley Greenspon, nieces Marilyn Hopper, Ilene Greenspon and Laura Greene. She is survived by her sons Mark Adler, Eric Adler (wife Marilyn), and daughter Lori Veltri (husband Sam), two grandsons Joseph Adler and Zachary Adler, brother Leonardo Sudman (wife Marty), and several other beloved nieces, nephews, their families and many dear friends.
Beverly will be laid to rest at Mount Sinai Cemetery, Los Angeles, on September 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society(https://www.cancer.org) or The City of Hope(https://cityofhope.org)
