Mount Sinai offers the traditional Jewish observances of Taharah (ritual washing) and Sh’mira (watching over the deceased and reciting Psalms). We also work with Chevra Kadisha (holy society) volunteer organizations around the country to ensure that all customs are properly handled according to Orthodox traditions. (Although there is a privately-owned mortuary in Los Angeles named "Chevra Kadisha Mortuary", that establishment is not a volunteer society.)
To clarify how Mount Sinai can assist your family, it's important to understand the differences between the terms Mortuary, Funeral Home and Cemetery. Many people are not aware that terms Funeral Home and Mortuary are synonymous and can be used interchangeably. Both terms refer to an organization, hired by a survivor of the decedent or the person responsible for handling funeral arrangements, that provides goods and services relating to and leading up to the burial. The word cemetery refers to the location where the deceased are buried. Because Mount Sinai provides mortuary services AND owns/operates two cemetery properties, we can assist you with ALL of the arrangements relating to death and dying. There is no need to make funeral arrangements at one meeting and go elsewhere to select burial property. One meeting with a Mount Sinai representative takes care of everything.
